Sacred Postpartum Care

Giving birth is a profound and deeply moving time in a woman’s life and affects change in all realms -physical, emotional, energetic and spiritual. Milk coming in, breastfeeding all day every day, relationship dynamics changing, and huge physical and hormonal shifts take place within a few short days to weeks. Caring for your own well-being is essential to replenish your energy in order to care for your growing family. Utilizing a deep understanding of the physiological and psychological needs of postpartum women, I offer mother-centered postpartum care for family wellness.

Ancient postpartum traditions throughout the world—while specific to the cultural context in which they come—all share deep common roots. These traditions are rooted in women’s physiologic design and include an extended resting period, warmth, specific foods, healing bodywork and a supportive community. I understand the unique needs and opportunities of the postpartum period - to create, maintain and sustain postpartum wellness.

"At 24 years old, I wanted to die after the birth of my first child. I had significantly prolapsed and had to insert a pessary to keep my uterus from falling out. I had severe urinary incontinence. Doctors told me I would need a hysterectomy in the next few years and if I had more children, my uterus would completely come out. I was hopeless.

Dr. Rebecca Cohen has healed my significant prolapse/ incontinence, connected me to my most sacred space (my pelvic bowl), and empowered me on my postpartum/ motherhood journey. I have 3 beautiful babies, ZERO prolapse/ incontinence symptoms, no need for a pessary, an improved sex life, a well defined femininity, and a passion for living. My life and pelvis are balanced thanks to her."

"Seeing Rebecca has changed my life- from my abdominal and gut health to sacrum and pelvic bowl healing. Her in-depth knowledge and experience with anatomy and Western Medicine, fused and grounded with nature and Mayan medicine, makes her one of the most gifted healers and doctors I have ever come across! And her ease and kindness and skilled touched paired with all of that- it's a win win win.  I found her when I was 1 year postpartum with my first child and still having many ailments from delivery. That was four years ago, and I have continued to see her for fertility, pregnancy and postpartum with my second baby! As long as I am living in Kentucky, I will continue to see Rebecca regularly, because her skilled and gentle way is one of the keys for my body and soul's health and vitality. Thank you so much Rebecca for all you are and all you do and share! It's invaluable."

Sacred Postpartum Home Visits
Mothering the Mother

As early as 3 days following the birth of your child I visit you in your home allowing you to protect and honor the sanctity of your postpartum bond while receiving the nurturing care you deserve.

Our time together is specialized to your needs and may include:

  • Breastfeeding support

  • Education on healing abdominal separation and tools for pelvic floor support including nutritional recommendations, movement suggestions, and breath work/mindfulness techniques

  • Herbal remedies, including nourishing herbal infusions, herbal remedies for after pains, sore nipples and other common postpartum concerns.

  • Moxibustion treatment (heated Chinese mugwort steam applied to the body). According to Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), the “Life Gate” open during the birth process, and allows passage of the baby. Moxibustion assists in the closing of this gate so that the postpartum mother’s qi (life energy) is not chronically diminished.

  • Gentle Uterine, Abdominal and Hip massage (Arvigo Techniques of Mayan Abdominal Therapy) to align the uterus, aiding in postpartum healing and encouraging involution to occur more quickly and efficiently. Massage supports the uterus and ligaments to return to an optimal position and helps bring the pelvis into balance.

  • Energy Work to tune into the sacred birth energy that you and your baby share.

  • Vaginal Herbal Steam that warms the uterus encouraging any remaining contents of the womb to exit and healing the sensitive tissues of birth passage.

  • A Witness, to listen and help you integrate your birth process and your journey to become a new mother.

Your session will be tailored to meet your specific needs and wishes. Rituals to sanctify this sacred right of passage into motherhood can be included such as closing of the bones, vaginal steaming, honoring the placenta, sacred mother blessings. and birth energy meditations.

Postpartum Root Care

After birth, the attention often turns immediately to the baby and the mother’s needs take a back seat. Care of women’s vaginas and pelvic floors are minimized and shrouded in shame throughout our lives, and continue to be after childbirth. Often, when women experience challenges involving the care of this sacred part of our body, they have no one to turn to, and no idea what is normal or not.

Some of the most common and harmful postpartum thought patterns derive from the health of our “root” center.

Are you experiencing:

- Fears of looking in the mirror?

- Concern that you are broken or damaged, (especially if you have symptoms of prolapse or incontinence)?

- Anxiety about returning to sex, exercise, or the other self-care habits that used to make you feel well?

In our sessions together you will learn:

* The best healing practices for vaginal tears
* Changes to the vaginal/vulvar tissues and pelvic bowl after birth, including: what’s normal and when to be concerned
* Prolapses and how to identify and support them
* When to seek help from professionals and how to choose a provider

I will teach you how to use specific techniques, including:
* Sitz bath and vaginal steaming
* Herbal support
* Vaginal self-massage
* Mindfulness practices connecting to your pelvic bowl, to support the release of energetic blocks
* Harnessing the power of the birth energy - the birthright you and your baby share
* Postpartum movement and exercise timelines for when, and how to start moving your body

For in-person sessions, the body work will include one or more of the following: Arvigo Techniques of Maya Abdominal Therapy®, Holistic Pelvic Care and Craniosacral therapy.

Read more about the benefits of these techniques below.

Mayan Abdominal Therapy Postpartum

The uterine ligaments stretch significantly during pregnancy and birth. Abdominal massage helps the uterus return to its optimal position in a timely manner and strengthen the ligaments. Techniques to minimize diastasis recti (the separation of abdominal muscles) are applied and taught to the mother as part of her self-care. Instruction in use of the faja (support wrap) as well as use of castor packs to heal the ligaments is given. Vaginal Steam Baths help nourish and heal uterine and vaginal tissues.

Holistic Pelvic Care Postpartum

Did you know that in France and other countries around the world, pelvic rehabilitation after pregnancy is considered a routine part of postnatal care? Read an amusing article about it written by an American woman who gave birth in France here. Postpartum pelvic floor care is an essential part of women’s healthcare which decreases pelvic floor difficulties including incontinence, pelvic pain and prolapse later in life.

As early as six weeks postpartum, I offer a treatment designed for new mothers to revitalize the root after the birth of your baby. This helps to resolve postpartum symptoms such as pelvic pain, discomfort, or muscle weakness and greatly assists overall healing. Women who have experienced trauma during childbirth find that restoring pelvic balance aids their recovery. Women who have experienced cesarean sections can benefit the nourishing practices of Holistic Pelvic Care, particularly following a prolonged labor process preceding the cesarian. This modality can also provide assistance with fascial release in the cesarean scar tissue and may help to energetically complete the birth process.

Honor yourself and your body by taking this step to wellness, so that you may begin your journey of mothering from your true center.

In-office treatments can be resumed 2-6 weeks after birth in order to realign the pelvis, encourage better uterine position, and to help heal tears, scars and hemorrhoids.
